Open Packet Transponder & Open Line Systems

From Edgecore Networks and SmartOptics

With the increase in data and video traffic for CSPs, upgrades to existing equipment are required as mobile backhaul usage surges with coming 5G deployments. Sitting at the edge of the network, the Cell Site Gateway (CSG) is a high volume deployment product and a natural location for network operators to start enjoying the benefits of open networking.

The disaggregated cell site gateway removes single vendor lock-in and traditionally slow technology roadmaps from incumbent. Edgecore CSG family is truly open hardware that can run different commercial and open source operating systems, offering choice to the operators.

Cassini Network Toplogy

Cassini is a 1.5-RU open packet optical transponder, whose design was contributed to Telecom Infra Project (TIP) by Edgecore Networks and which is now generally available as a commercial open network product from Edgecore. It is the industry's highest capacity and first modular open packet transponder offering a flexible mix of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) packet switching ports and 100/200 Gbps coherent optical interfaces for data center interconnect and service provider backhaul use cases.

As an open network platform, Cassini supports disaggregated software options including OcNOSTM from IP Infusion, a whitebox switching NOS optimized for service provider and data center interconnect applications. Its availability on the Cassini packet optical transponder can help network operators easily extend and migrate existing metro and long-haul Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) networks to add new 100G capacities, and extend inter-DC L2 and L3 services. Later in 2019, Fujitsu carrier grade NOS will be supported on Cassini as well.

Combined with the Transponder Abstraction Interface (TAI), which greatly simplifies the integration work between a network operating system and the underlying optical hardware, operators are equipped with more flexibility and faster time to deliver for the quick replacement of individual components, rather than replacing entire monolithic solutions.

Open Packet Transponder & Open Line Systems Hardware

Open Line Systems
Next generation platform for PAM 4 and Coherent DWDM DCI connectivity

DCP-M and M-Series are truly open line systems. They work with any combination of embedded DWDM, transponder and muxponder traffic depending on the specific needs of the network.

DCP-M is exactly like using a passive multiplexer, but unlike a passive multiplexer it monitors the traffic, amplifies the signals for longer distances and can handle higher data rate protocols.

  • ETSI form factor
  • Any combination of DWDM transceivers, transponders or muxponders
  • No complex setup and minimal optical fiber knowledge required
  • Completely automatic optical setup, just like using a passive multiplexer
  • Automatic fiber distance measurement and Dispersion Compensation setting
  • Simple and cost effective datacom not telecom platform
