From its launch in 2009, the Juniper MX204 revolutionized network building across various industries. This SDN-enabled Universal Routing Platform empowered enterprises, mid-sized businesses, and service providers to expand their metro Ethernet networks.

However, with the Juniper MX204 now reaching its End-of-Life, the demand for an alternative solution has emerged. Enter OcNOS, IP Infusion’s Network Operating System, which can accelerate the shift to disaggregated networking and equip enterprises, service providers, and other entities to meet the internet demands of the future.

How Is OcNOS a Replacement For Juniper MX204?

Upon its launch, the Juniper MX204 immediately stood out from many other solutions that were available at the time. It combined a full-feature set, forwarding capacity, and scalability while having an excellent initial price point.

So, when it was announced that the Juniper MX204 platform was going end-of-life (EOL), users were understandably disappointed and began their search for a viable replacement.

The Juniper MX204 EOL was revoked about a year after it was issued, but this revocation only included select platform models. That said, Juniper is moving forward with its plans to sunset many of its MX204 routers.

Even though Juniper quickly walked back its EOL, efforts to find a replacement were already well underway. IP Infusion’s OcNOS rapidly rose to the top of the list, especially after we announced that our disaggregated networking solution would support leading-edge technology like Broadcom’s Qumran 2C chipset. This was exemplified by the UfiSpace S9600-72XC, a multi-function, disaggregated white box aggregation routing platform.

MX204 vs S9600-72XC

Equipped with Broadcom's Qumran 2C merchant silicon and an Intel Skylake processor, the S9600-72XC offers high capacity routing, better power efficiencies, and more buffering within a compact 2RU router. With 64x25G and 8x100G high-speed ports and a switching capacity of up to 2.4Tbs, it can be deployed in various roles, including 5G fronthaul transport aggregation, backhaul aggregation, and as a Broadband Network Gateway (BNG). Its high port density, Class C timing, and full support for SyncE and IEEE 1588v2 make it capable of fulfilling any network aggregation role, specializing in 5G Time Sensitive Networking applications.

OcNOS benefits include:

  • Hardened carrier-grade solutions that are fully qualified with multi-vendor open networking platforms Breaks vendor lock-in
  • Scalable software for terabit switching bandwidth
  • Lower TCO: Up to 65-75% savings against Traditional Tier-1 vendors
  • A broad ecosystem of technology and integration partners

OcNOS key highlights include:

  • Packaged disaggregated networking solutions for faster deployment and shorter time-to-revenue
  • Netconf and OpenConfig data models for network automation, orchestration, and control
  • Standard Cisco-like CLI
  • Flexible deployment: OcNOS solutions addressing different use cases across the data center and service provider networks
  • World-class 24/7/365 support
