The data center landscape is constantly evolving, with demands for higher bandwidth and lower latency skyrocketing, especially with the rise of AI/ML and High-Performance Computing (HPC). Stepping up to meet these challenges is Celestica's DS5000, an 800G Ethernet switch designed for the future.

Our engineer at our Switch Lab in Indianapolis, Kevin Wagner, took a closer look at the DS5000 in our latest unboxing.

Unleashing 51.2 Tbps of Performance

The DS5000 is a 64-port OSFP switch with each of these ports is capable of handling a massive 800G. The engine driving this throughput is Broadcom's Tomahawk 5 ASIC, enabling it to deliver a colossal 51.2 Terabits per second of non-blocking switching capacity. This raw power is crucial for modern data centers that need to move vast amounts of data quickly and efficiently. The PHYless design contributes to superior low latency and power efficiency – a key consideration for demanding applications.

Versatility in Configuration and Design

The DS5000 isn't just about brute force; it's also about flexibility. Each 800G port can be configured to run at various speeds, including 50G, 100G, 200G, or 400G, catering to diverse networking needs. This adaptability is further enhanced by the ability to break out these OSFP ports into two, four, or even eight separate port configurations using the appropriate breakout cables.

Physically, the DS5000 packs this performance into a compact 2U form factor. Reliability is paramount in data center operations, and the DS5000 addresses this with hot-swappable, redundant N+1 PSUs and 3+1 fans. The DS5000 carries four PSUs with two being redundant, as well as three fan modules, with one being redundant.

Open Networking and Management

Celestica has designed the DS5000 with open networking in mind. It features an Open Network Install Environment (ONIE), allowing for the installation of compatible open-source and commercial Network Operating Systems (NOS). This includes support for popular options like SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud), giving users freedom and flexibility in their software choices.

For system management, the DS5000 offers shared CPU/BMC and console ports (RJ45), along with a BMC System Management Option for robust remote monitoring and control. Underpinning its processing capabilities are options for an Intel Xeon D 4-core processor (upgradable to an 8-core), up to 32GB DDR4 memory, and a 256GB M.2 SSD. It also supports ZR/ZR+ Coherent Optical Modules, future-proofing investments.

Ideal Applications

The Celestica DS5000 is engineered for the most demanding environments. Its high density and throughput make it an optimal solution for:

  • AI/ML clusters and emerging technologies

  • High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure

  • Big Data and Analytics workloads

  • Data Center Leaf/Spine applications in an 800GbE fabric

Conclusion

The Celestica DS5000 is more than just a switch; it's a foundational element for next-generation data centers. Its combination of massive throughput, flexible configuration, robust design, and commitment to open networking makes it a compelling choice for organizations looking to build high-performance, scalable, and future-ready network infrastructures.
