A decade has now elapsed since the creation of the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) and the Open Compute Project (OCP). The establishment of these two organizations, and the communities that spawned from within, has led to a complete reshaping of the data center market, and more recently, with the addition of the Telecom Infra Project, the telecoms industry.

This is my second installment of this particular blog, as the ever-changing landscape of the open networking world dictates it. We have a bevy of new additions on the software side mainly down to the new bare metal devices for the telecoms industry from the OCP projects from the ONF and TIP. You can catch up on this in my previous blog. Here are the 2020 runners and riders in alphabetical order so no one thinks I am playing favorites.

Since 2012, hyperscale data center operators have enjoyed the benefits of the bare metal/whitebox revolution that has taken place in networking. Nearly a quarter of all switches now shipped are bare-metal and that does not include the brite boxes (bare-metal rebranded like HPE and Dell) in that figure. It has become easier to automate, scale, provision our data centers, not to mention the reduced CAPEX and OPEX.

The OCP’s 3^rd regional summit in Amsterdam’s RAI centre was a resounding success by every measure.  Attendance increased by 9% to 700 visitors, with those visitors hailing from 38 different countries. There were executive talks, engineering workshops, case studies, project working groups and new product announcements from the likes of Inspur and Wiwynn. While videos and slides for all these sessions are available on the OCP’s  website nothing can really replicate attending to get a feel for the way the OCP and industry is shifting, and the shift was noticeable.
