In this edition, Coherent announces the introduction of the WaveMaker 4000A, a programmable optical spectrum synthesizer that can generate arbitrary spectral shapes across the C-band of optical communications; the WaveShaper 1000B and 4000B for the Super L-Band, both devices support arbitrary spectral filter shapes of attenuation and phase. Also - the new WaveShaper App and WaveAnalyzer GUI packages are available for download, and you can enjoy 24/7 remote access to an Optical Lab in Sydney, Australia.

Introducing the WaveMaker™ 4000A Programmable Optical Spectrum Synthesizer

Coherent is proud to present the WaveMaker 4000A Programmable Optical Spectrum Synthesizer. This device enables the generation of arbitrary spectral shapes across the C-band of optical communications. It also supports the addition of signals, such as modulated channels, from external sources. The WaveMaker is the perfect tool for creating multi-channel signals or “combs” for communication component and system testing applications.

The WaveMaker 4000A can generate spectral shapes in the C-Band with widths as narrow as 10 GHz and extinction ratios exceeding 60 dB. The maximum total output power is 14 dBm.

The internal configuration of the WaveMaker 4000A features an ASE Source and a programmable filter for shaping the ASE, typically carving out the desired channels. An EDFA ensures sufficient output power is available. The WaveShaper module acts as a programmable Multiplexer, removing remaining undesired ASE and supporting the multiplexing of additional channels from external sources into the signal. Finally, the output signal is measured with an internal Optical Spectrum Analyzer module.

The Graphical User Interface that accompanies the WaveMaker provides an intuitive and simple way of programming the desired output channel scheme. The “Preview” graphic shows the programmed channels, while the “Current Profile and Measurement” graphic shows the spectrum exiting the WaveMaker, including a measurement using the internal OSA module.

The WaveMaker 4000A was showcased at ECOC 2023 in Glasgow.

Launching WaveShaper® 1000B and 4000B for the Super L-Band

Coherent introduces the WaveShaper 1000B and 4000B for the Super L-Band. Both devices support arbitrary spectral filter shapes of attenuation and phase across the entire operating range from 1572.97 nm to 1627.10 nm. They offer a minimum filter bandwidth of 10 GHz, which reduces to 8 GHz in “High Resolution” mode. The 1000B features a 1x1 port configuration, while the 4000B has a 1x4 port configuration.

Like other WaveShaper B-Series devices, these Super L–Band units offer a filter update rate of more than 10 uploads per second! They also include a web server and can be controlled via Coherent’s WaveShaper App package.

These instruments come with a RESTful Application Programming Interface (API) for easy integration into automated systems using various programming and operating environments.

The Super L-Band WaveShaper will be showcased at ECOC 2023 and will start shipping in October 2023.

WaveShaper App

The latest WaveShaper App package (version 2.2.0) can be downloaded here. This package allows control of all versions of the WaveShaper A-Series and B-Series.

WaveAnalyzer GUI package

The latest WaveAnalyzer GUI package (version 1.9.0) is available for download here. This package supports control of all versions of the WaveAnalyzer family.

Online WaveShaper and WaveAnalyzer

Enjoy 24/7 remote access to an Optical Lab, which includes a WaveShaper and a WaveAnalyzer, located in Sydney, Australia. Full control of the instruments is possible either through the Web GUI, through the Windows App packages or through the RESTful API.

This setup is located in Sydney/Australia. The WaveShaper can be accessed using http://203.219.49.106 and the WaveAnalyzer using http://203.219.49.105/waveanalyzer.html. Full control of the instruments is possible either through the Web GUI (see screenshots on the next page), through the Windows App packages or through the RESTful API.

In this example, the WaveShaper was programmed with a sinc shape filter in the center of the transmission window plus 100 GHz wide channels on the lower and upper end of the spectrum.

The WaveAnalyzer 1500S displays the programmed shape. Please note that changes may be observed if multiple users are accessing the remote instruments simultaneously.
