"Finisar's Raman amplifier module is an intelligent pump unit for distributed Raman amplification. The Raman amplifier module can accommodate two or three pumps (multiple wavelengths) for C or L-band amplification, and includes full and comprehensive electronic control. The dual and triple-pump models have a maximum output power of 700 mW and 1 W, respectively. Using patent pending technology, the Raman pump unit can operate in full automatic gain control (AGC) mode, thus allowing the Raman gain to be set with an accuracy of +/-0.7 dB."

The application of Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADM) in DWDM optical networks has expanded in recent years to support increasingly more directions as well as increased flexibility in the add/drop structure. Flexgrid® technology is now essential in the efficient use of optical bandwidth for extremely high data rates and advanced modulation formats employed by next generation DWDM transmitters/receivers, including 400Gb/s and 1 Tbit/s signals of the future. These higher data rates require that channel spacing is flexible and can be increased real-time to allow the network to adapt to new transmission formats. Deployment of colorless, directionless (CD) ROADMs and colorless, directionless, contentionless (CDC) is facilitated by the introduction of route & select (R&S) ROADM architectures which, unlike broadcast & select (B&S) ROADMs that require only one WSS per direction, require two WSS per direction. By integrating two WSS, each featuring superior optical performance, in a single module the dual WSS modules by Finisar are optimized for this new generation of R&S ROADMs. Dual WSS modules can also be used as CD 2xNxM Add/Drop modules. Enabled by Finisar LCoS technology, Finisar dual WSS products support Flexgrid® technology, which provides dynamic control of the channel width. Furthermore, once deployed, channel plans are configurable ‘on-the-fly’, meaning that channel bandwidths can be adjusted to most efficiently carry future demand as it arises. Furthermore, Flexgrid® offers full backwards compatibility with both the standard 100 GHz and 50 GHz ITU grids. Flexgrid® also enables the equalization of the power within a single channel, especially important for multicarrier optical signals. Finisar dual modules are available in two mechanical versions: Standard Profile and Low Profile. Low Profile is specifically designed for applications where available space is limited; single slot linecards, for example, require dualHD Low Profile modules. Standard Profile modules can be used in all other applications.

"Increasing demand for network services is driving the introduction of new transmission formats and channel management technologies that facilitate the efficient use of optical bandwidth for extremely high data rates. While the introduction of coherent techniques such as Dual-Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DP-QPSK) enables 100Gb/s transmission within a 50 GHz channel, traffic with higher data rates, including 400 Gb/s and 1 Tbit/s signals of the future, are not expected to fit inside 50 GHz wide channels. These higher data rates require that channel spacings are flexible and can be increased to allow the use of new transmission formats. Finisar's Flexgrid® technology provides dynamic control of the channel center frequency with 6.25 GHz resolution and channel width with 12.5 GHz resolution within a Wavelenth Selective Switch (WSS), the key element in a Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM). Once deployed, channel plans are configurable 'on-the-fly', meaning that channel bandwidths can be adjusted to most efficiently carry future demands as they arise. As frequency slot edges are aligned to the 12.5 GHz ITU grid, Flexgrid offers full backwards compatibility with both the standard 100 GHz and 50 GHz ITU grids, as illustrated below. "Finisar's UltraSpan® EDFAs are network-ready managed 1RU rack units designed to support long links which require amplification. The product can be operated as a fully independent Network Element, or integrated into an existing NE, using a comprehensive and user-friendly GUI or SNMP/RS232 communications, and is an excellent solution for immediate deployment of EDFA-based systems. The unit includes a built-in option for remote management and monitoring of the amplifier via an optical supervisory channel (OSC) which carries out-of-band (1510nm/1610nm) management data between the in-line amplifiers and the amplifiers located at the terminal stations. Thus, all UltraSpan Inline Amplifiers along the link are connected to one another via the OSC carrying standard Ethernet, and can be accessed and managed from any of the terminal or in-line locations. As with all UltraSpan products, the unit includes an SNMP agent and GUI-based web server enabling easy management and monitoring by accessing its IP address from any of the Ethernet ports located on the UltraSpan products along the link."
